Beat-Alabama Swimming & Diving

Game Preview
Alabama starts off the season strong with a sweep against Delta State and is looking to continue their momentum against Georgia following behind their new coach Coley Stickels.
What to look Forward to
A lot of people are looking forward to this season because The University of Alabama has announced Indiana Head sprint coach Coley Stickels as their new head coach for the Men’s and Women’s Swimming and Diving team . Stickels was previously the associate head sprint coach for the Indiana Hoosiers. Stickels was with Indiana since 2017, prior to that he was a highly regarded club coach the Canyons Aquatic Club in California. Alabama Swimming and Diving assistant volunteer coach Oliver Patrouch said, “Although Coach Stickels has only been here for a couple of months he has made his presence very present and has changed a lot of things around here already, our entire coaching staff is looking forward to this season and working alongside Sickels.” He will take over an Alabama program that graduates star sprinter Robert Howard, but are returning Zane Waddell and Sam Disette on the men’s side and Flora Molnar on the women’s side. The women are also returning NCAA scoring distance swimmer Kensey McMahon. Stickels swam collegiately at Arizona and was a 14-time All-American when he graduated in 2001. He was also a member of the US National Team from 1990-2000. He began coaching at Dartmouth College as an assistant in 2001.

How they left off
Alabama Swimming and Diving takes seventh at the 2019 Men’s NCAA Championships. This is the Crimson Tide’s top-10 finish in the past 5 years and sixth top-15 finish in a row at the National Championships. It was also Alabama’s best finish since taking sixth in 2016 and its 16th top-10 finish since first making it into the national standings in 1973.
The Tide also got some help from Senior Robert Howard who posted a 41.75 in the 100-meter freestyle to take fifth place. Alabama then closed out the meet taking seventh place, combining for a time of 2:48.92 from Howard, Seniors Knox Auerbach and Laurent Bams and junior Zane Waddell to the consolation final of the 400 freestyle relay and took ninth overall. UA senior swimmer Kacey Oberlander said, “It was great to see our boys finish on such a high note, not only does it push everyone else to strive for greatness it also shows us a first-hand perspective of the amount of work you must put into your craft to be at the to.’’ Lastly, in the freshman prelims Nicholas Perera posted a career best 1:56.95 in the 200 breast stroke to take 45th place and ranking him eighth all-time at UA.

The UA Swimming Diving team are set to face off against a potent Georgia University Swimming and Diving team who took home 18th place at the National Championships last season. The meet is to take place on October 4th at 1:00 pm. at the Birmingham CrossPlex Natatorium. All meets this fall will be on the road while work is completed on the Alabama Aquatic Center renovations. The Tide have just moved into the recently completed team suites and began training in the newly built outdoor pool this summer. The renovations to the indoor 50-meter by 25-yard pool complex should be completed in November.
The Crimson Tide opened up their 2019-20 Collegiate season with a sweep against Delta State, however this wasn’t just their first meet of the season it was the first swimming and diving competition of the year. This year’s meet marked the seventh year in a row that the two teams have made the first splash of the NCAA season with Alabama going undefeated over that stretch. The Crimson Tide men won 13 of 16 events while the women won 14 out of 16 events on the way to drowning Delta State in the season opener. Alabama’s women beat Delta State 204-91 and the men won 186-109, overall the Tide won 27 of 32 events, including all four relay races. In total, 18 different men and women won individual events for the Tide, while four swimmers and one diver picked up a pair of individual wins on the day. The Crimson Tide came out on fire, taking first and second place in the first seven races and closed things out by taking first place in the last 11 events. A total of 25 women and 24 men competed in the Crimson Tide’s opener, while eight women and six men made their Alabama Debuts.

Could Alabama go all the way?
Along with a new coach and new facility The University of Alabama Swimming and Diving Team is looking for nothing else but at least a top 5 finish at the NCAA championships. After finishing seventh at the NCAA Championships last year, this was the Tide’s fourth top-10 finish in the past 5 years and sixth top -15 finish in a row at the national championships. I think the Alabama Swimming and Diving team is going to make a major splash this year.

New Head Coach
New head coach Coley Stickels looks to have this team in mid-season form already, which is great news for the Swimming and Diving followers. So far, I have only heard positive things about Coach Stickels which leads me to believe this year could be one for the books. Kacey Oberlander, UA swimmer said, “There has just been a good vibe around the entire team ever since Coach Stickels got to Tuscaloosa, just a whole new energy from everyone on the team.” With depth all over the team from the next years recruits to the senior class I would put this team up against just about anybody. Following the Vanderbilt meet Coach Stickels had this to say, “Having two meets in two days in two different cities can be a challenge, but our ladies kept their focus and swam hard today, giving us two good days of competition. We looked at back to back meets as a prelims/finals scenario that we will ultimately face later on during championship season. From here, we just need to keep our momentum moving in the right direction and continue to train hard as we move forward through the season.” I really enjoyed this quote from Coach Stickels because first of all it shows that he is not satisfied and is really going to push this team to their limits, which is exactly what I think they need. This also shows the resilience of the team, two meets in two days is hard enough, especially in two different cities. The team showed that even though all their meets are away because of the new facility being built that they are going to show up and give it their all no matter where the meet is.

Hot Start
The Tide has been looking strong already this year with wins past Delta State and sweeping Vanderbilt in individual races and both relays. Beating the Commodores 146-105, this was the Crimson Tide’s second meet in two days after opening against Georgia and just falling short in Birmingham.
Looking Promising
Sophomore Ryhan White once again won both backstroke events, adding her two-day individual win total to five, continue to show her dominance at these meets. Also, Kensey McMahon made her presence felt again by sweeping the distance freestyle events for the second meet in a row after winning the 500 and 1,000 freestyles against the Dogs and Commodores. In all, Alabama won nine events Georgia and 14 against Vanderbilt for a total of 23 across two meets. Also, against Vanderbilt, Alabama took the top-two spots in eight races, containing both relays.
Meet Highlights
Freshman Caitlin Reynera won the 100 and 200 breaststrokes with times of 1:03.97 and 2:19.30.
Senior Alexis Preski showed her range, winning the 200 freestyle (1:53.15) and the 200-individual medley (2:05.02).
Junior Flora Molnar won the 100 freestyle (50.14) and the 100 butterfly (55.29).
Sophomore Rhyan White followed a three-day win against Georgia with a pair of individual wins against Vanderbilt, taking first in the 100 and 200 backstrokes, clocking times of 53.79 and 1:56.7.
Sophomore Cat Wright (200 butterfly/ 2:04.28) and Senior Allie Surrency (50 freestyle / 23.54), helping the Tide sweep the Commodores.

Two Alabama Swimmers ranked No.1 Nationally
In all, UA has six swimmers ranked in the top-10 nationally in 11 different individual races, while the Tide is also ranked in the top-10 in four relays. Sophomore Kensey McMahon is No. 1 in the nation in the 1,000 freestyle, with a time that puts her nearly 10 seconds ahead of her closest competition. She is also tied for second in the 500 freestyle, and her flexibility is on display with a 10th-place ranking in the 400-individual medley. Cam Auerbach, freshman swimmer said, “It really is an experience getting to practice with these nationally ranked swimmers every day. You get to see first-hand what it takes to live out your dreams.” Fellow sophomore Rhyan White currently holds two top-five rankings in the backstroke events. White is third nationally in the 200 and fifth in the 100. With both times coming in at less than a second off the national lead. Senior Alexis Preski also adds a pair of top-10 rankings, joining McMahon in the top 10 for the 400 at sixth and in eight for the 200 butterfly.
Vanderbilt’s Post Meet Thoughts
Vanderbilt’s coach said, “For the freshmen’s first meet coming out of the gate, I thought they did really well. Alabama is a very good and deep team, so I thought that everybody rose to the occasion and did a great job setting the tone for the rest of the season,” said Jeremy Organ.

Conclusion
I really do think that the University of Alabama Swimming and Diving team is going to have a great year. From the new coach to the new facility the energy around the team is great right now. After starting off on fire the team needs to stay focused and continue their momentum and learn from each week of practice. With plenty of depth, potential, and talent the team shouldn’t be hoping for anything less than a national championship this year.

Major Renovation for the Tide’s Swimming and Diving Team
A look at the new renovation and renewal plans final product for the Aquatic Center.
Along with a new head coach, comes a $21 million-dollar renewal and renovation of the Alabama Aquatic Center, home to both the men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams. https://cw.ua.edu/53596/sports/swimming-makes-splash-with-new-coach-upgraded-facility/
What’s New/ The Plan
Sneak peek picture into the new commons area, including new nutrition station.
For the project, the plan is to convert the current 25-yard indoor pool into an outdoor 25-yard by 25-meter pool that is deep enough for springboard diving. Also, a new diving platform in the indoor pool, an athletic training room as well as an expanded deck space, sectional glass roll-up doors along the west side of the building, new pool deck surface, and finally new lighting along with additional spectator seating. The renovation also includes a new team suite that houses locker rooms for both the men’s and women’s teams as well as a new nutrition station, team meeting room, a team lounge, coaches office and a new conference room for use by both teams. Although these renovation plans are awesome and the whole team is excited about these renovations they won’t be completed anytime soon and the team doesn’t plan to host a swim meet for the entire 2019-2020 season. Kacey Oberlander, UA Swimmer said, “Although I am a senior and will not get to use the facilities this season I know that these renovations are extremely important to the team who think these are long overdue and believe this is one of the last steps, along with a brand-new popular coach to throw us into that top 10 finish at nationals. There is a certain attitude with the team that is carried when you know you have one of the top facilities in the country.” Here is a video that shows you around the new locker room and facility. https://www.youtube.com/watch?time_continue=2&v=_uWGFc4TFn8
Why
The Alabama Swimming and Diving team has been on the rise for the last couple of years and these new facilities are just what they needed to take that final step to get to the top. UA Athletic Director, Greg Byrnes, had this to say, “Long considered one of the nation’s fastest pools, the expansion and complete renovation of the Alabama Aquatic Center will bring the entire facility up to a championship standard. The changes and additions will enhance our training and competitive environment and give our swimming and diving programs everything they need to be successful at the highest levels.” Things are obviously a little different with the swim team this year since over the last year Hall of Fame coach, Dennis Pursley retired and the overdue upgrade to the facilities was finally approved. Alabama’s latest pool was known for being a fast venue because of the depth and after the renovations the new pool is expected to be the same. The deeper the pool means less resistance and what kind of turmoil flows through the lanes. No one will know for sure how fast it is until it is completed, but everything else from the new 7.5-and 3-meter diving platforms to the team suite and locker are already huge improvements.https://rolltide.com/news/2018/2/22/swimming-diving-alabama-swimming-and-diving-home-to-undergo-21-million-renewal-and-renovation.aspx
Reactions
Ashley Slayton, UA Swimmer said, “We are beyond grateful and lucky to have these new renovations taking place here, I do believe that everyone on the team is holding themselves to a higher standard and realize that we must compete day in and day out to be on top with the other organizations.” All the swimmers here are ecstatic about their new home and can’t wait for the renovations to be over with and to host their first meet during the 2020 season. Former Head Coach and future Hall of Famer said, “We’re very excited to be moving forward with this project that will significantly enhance our training and competition facilities, this project will also provide a top-of-the-line team suite that will include new locker rooms and nutrition station as well a team meeting room and a separate team lounge. The addition of a 25-yard by 25-meter outdoor pool that will also include springboard diving stations will greatly enhance our versatility in terms of training as well as hosting meets.”

What’s Next
With the addition of the new facilities and renovations everything seems like it is coming together for the Tide’s swimming and diving team. They have many star swimmers who are off to a hot start this year, and with news of the new facilities, recruiting has only gone up so far as well. Some of the best swimmers in the world are beginning to train in Tuscaloosa and new head coach, Coley Stickels believes that, “The new facilities are considered state of the art, I think they rival any in the SEC, if not the country. One of the key components here is just getting people to see our facilities, to see the campus. To me it’s almost like a hidden gem,” said head coach Coley Stickels. Even the upcoming seasons are looking good with Coley Stickels going on to say this, “We have a good shot at getting more than a few of those recruits. With the new facilities and the weight room, and everything we bring to the table we are actually not worried about it. Even compared to Indiana, Alabama trumps a lot of the resources that we had at Indiana and we were pretty good there,” Head Coach Stickels said. As you can tell not only are the players amped up but the new head coach is very optimistic and thinks that the Tide is going to continue to be a problem in the upcoming years. https://www.si.com/college/alabama/bamacentral/alabama-swimming-crimson-tide-swimming-coley-stickles-zane-waddell-kensey-mcmahon/

Bleacher Report
Organization Background
Bleacher Report is a digital media company that delivers digital media content on sports all around the globe. Bleacher Report was founded in 2007 by sports enthusiasts David Finocchio, Alexander Freund, Bryan Goldberg, and Dave Nemetz who were all good friends from high school. Bleacher Report headquarters are stationed in San Francisco, but they also have offices in New York and London. Bleacher Report was acquired by Turner Broadcasting System in 2012 for $175 million dollars. In 2018 Bleacher Report and Turner Sports launched Bleacher Report live which includes a subscription video streaming service featuring live broadcasts of several major sports events. The idea first came around in 2005 and with the help of two old friends and by the spring of 2007 the company had moved into Menlo Park office space which went for $650 a month. In 2008 the company announced its public launching. Eight months later in October, Bleacher Report acquired $3.5 million dollars in Series B funding from Hillsven, Gordon Crawford, and Soft Tech VC. Finocchio remained as CEO of Bleacher Report under Turner. Goldberg and Nemetz transitioned out of their VP roles and Freund ended up leaving the company in 2009. In December 2010 a series C led by Crosslink Bank, obtained an additional 10.5 million dollars. In 2010 Bleacher Report named Brian Grey as its chief executive officer. Before Bleacher Report, Grey had leadership roles at Fox Sports and also Yahoo Sports.
Social Media Purpose
Bleacher Report is my favorite app to go for the latest scores and sports news. Bleacher Report is the best at getting recent sports news out before anyone else. The way they platform their content is one of my favorite aspects of the website because it is very user friendly and there are so many different options of what you can read about or you can click on a new tab at the top and learn all about a sport that you may have never been interested in. This website allows you to keep up on the news you are most interested in and at the same time learn about new sports you had never given much thought about before. Bleacher Report does everything from expert predictions on rookie awards to selling tickets to your favorite concert. Some of my favorite stories I’ve read have been from just searching through the website. The writers are very intelligent and always retweet their stories on twitter to get more exposure. The sleek feel and user-friendly easiness are my two favorite aspects of Bleacher Report, and when it comes to Instagram I believe this is where they do the best work. They post content on every sport and do not show favoritism to the bigger sports like the NFL and NBA.
https://bleacherreport.com/
Social Media Possibilities
Also, another one of my favorite things about Bleacher Report is that they don’t only post the hard-dry facts or stories, whenever I’m scrolling through Instagram Bleacher Report is always posting memes or funny pictures to convey the sports message unlike ESPN who only reports the hard facts. While some people may not enjoy this, I find it refreshing for them to take a different angle to get their message out. Sports news can get repetitive and this is one way of differentiating themselves. I think that Bleacher Report is doing a great job of keep their app and website fresh, and updating their social media frequently enough. Every time I get on Bleacher Report they have cycled in new stories and have gotten rid of the older information so that the users are pleased and can learn about the latest news as soon as possible whether that’s on the fly or just at home in the morning before you leave for work. I do believe that Bleacher Report could improve their app, I think it is pretty bland compared to some and most of the time I have trouble opening it on my phone so I am forced to go to the Instagram account or the actual website itself to get my updates. I would also like to see more interaction with the personalities and their stories. Maybe add a discussion board or someway to ask the writer questions about the story they have posted to get more details or just to clear up a question you have from the article. Sometimes on Bleacher Report’s Instagram stories you can vote on material they have posted so that is one way the users can give them insight and information on what’s working and what could be done better. Tik Tok is a fairly new app that I think Bleacher Report could utilize more because Tik Tok attracts such a young audience that is most likely to be unfamiliar with Bleacher Report. Tik Tok is all about creativity and fun clean humor. Bleacher Report already posts funny memes so I think they would be able to transition into Tik Tok pretty well. Lastly, I think Bleacher Report should hold more events where the followers can come and meet the writers behind all the amazing stories that they are producing and to see how operating a social media sports news outlet is actually ran and all the work that goes into it behind the scenes.
Long Feature Story
Art of Coaching
Middle School
From a very young age Dozier Dean recalls being completely mesmerized by sports especially the sport of football. Not just the action and competitive nature that comes with football but with the analytics and structure of how everything comes together. Dozier Dean grew up in Montgomery, Alabama along with his brother Collier who will be a freshman next year at the University of Alabama. He attended Saint James School from kindergarten all the way until twelfth. In middle school Dozier played all the sports he possibly could including football, basketball and baseball. Dozier quickly knew that his passion was for football. First, playing flag football from the third to sixth grade and then finally moving up to tackle football around the age of fourteen. Dozier who is around 5’5 feet tall and pretty slim knew from an early age that his football career was not going to last long. In addition to falling in love with sports Dozier also had a second love of hunting. His father, Jim, taught Dozier and his brother Collier everything there was to know about hunting from gun safety to the discipline you must have in a situation where you must be completely silent to not scare a deer or give your position away.
https://www.stjweb.org/
High School
In high school Dozier continued his love of sports by playing all three sports for all four years of his high school career. Even though Dozier was never the biggest or strongest on the court or field his heart and knowledge of the game left him superior to his fellow peers. Dozier played quarterback and called all the plays himself in high school for his team. Unlike most normal high schoolers Dozier spent his nights watching film staying up all night studying some of his favorite coaches like Bill Belichick and Nick Saban. Dozier grew up an Alabama fanatic, coming up to Tuscaloosa most weekends with his father and brother to watch the Tide play. Dozier would record the games he attended and then would go home and immediately re-watch the footage to see any details he may have missed. Reid Woodson, former St. James teammate said “Dozier had a work ethic from an early age that you do not see instilled in many teenagers. He would much rather draw plays and watch film then hang out at a friend’s house or go out to the movies.” Dozier realized he was not like all of his other friend’s and knew that football was what he wanted to do in life and nothing else would suffice. Dozier began to dig deep into offensive schemes and everything it takes to become a coach and ultimately lead a team to be the best they can possibly be. Dozier devoted countless hours to football and realizes now that he missed out on a lot of things that teenagers do in high school. This did not faze Dozier at all and knows that his hours of hard work will catch up to him one day and by then he will have forgotten about all the things he missed out on in high school. Dozier knew he was going to Alabama which had been his dream school since as long as he could remember and around the beginning of his senior year is where he began to get very serious about coaching. He told his high school coaches that he’d much rather coach than be on the team which they were dumbfounded by. They have never had a student come to them before the start of his senior year and ask to coach the team instead of being their starting quarterback. Obviously with high school rules he was not allowed to be an official coach so he continued the season at quarterback and led them deep into the playoffs. After the season, Dozier had a meeting with his head coach Jimmy Perry. During the meeting Dozier informed Jimmy that all he wanted to do was become a football coach and picked at Jimmy’s brain asking questions about how to go about it. After weeks of meetings and phone calls Dozier finally got the breakthrough he needed. Jimmy Perry had informed Dozier that he had talked to Kerry Stevenson, Alabama’s Director of Player Development and that the tide would love to have Dozier Dean on the coaching staff. Dozier’s dream had finally come true but realized very soon that all the hard work was just about to begin because of all the responsibilities that come with being a part of the nation’s best college football team.
https://new.berecruited.com/athletes/1715688
College
Upon arriving in Tuscaloosa for his freshmen year of college Dozier spent the entire summer following Jimmy Perry around, learning the ins and outs of football. Even though Dozier had been studying football the majority of his life he was still only nineteen years of age and had plenty to learn before he could contribute to the team. As a freshman Dozier’s job title was an offensive student assistant coach, doing most of the dirty work for the team to earn his spot. Kerry Stevenson said, “When I first met Dozier the one thing I noticed most was that he did not seem like a teenager at all, the intensity he brought to practice week in and week out was unprecedented and I knew I had made the right decision of bringing him on board.” Soon enough Dozier had moved up the ranks and earned the position of coaching the walk on receivers. Although Dozier’s dreams had come true he continues to strive every day for excellence and is grateful for the opportunity to learn from some of the best coaches in college football. Dozier loves nothing more than being on the field for Saturday’s and continues to work hard so that one day it will be his team and on his own terms, but for now he is just very grateful to be a part of the crimson tide.
https://rolltide.com/staff-directory
National Championship
Dozier has had opportunities that no twenty-one year could have imagined. From hearing Kobe Bryant and Mike Tyson talk to the team to SEC championships and college football appearances he said nothing compares to the 2018 National Championship. Dozier says it was way better than he ever could’ve imagined and made the years of hard work seem like nothing. To be a part of a team and watch everyone perfect their craft is very special and there aren’t many other team games like football. Football takes all eleven members on the same page or you are not going to be a successful football team. If one player messes up his assignment the entire play could be shot. From weekly meetings with Saban to coaching the receivers to the best of his ability Dozier has developed himself into the crimson tide circle and plans to stay here for as long as he can. Dozier said the most important thing he has learned here at the University of Alabama is that you either win or you learn or both. Saban said this to Dozier in one of their first ever meetings and Dozier has used this every day in his journey. One of Dozier’s favorite aspects of the game is seeing everything come together. Whether that is a certain player who has struggled before and has now grown into a leader on the team or watching the team develop from the beginning of the summer to the first game of the season. Dozier’s loves to see growth and progress because if you aren’t working every day for what you want then what is the point.

Future
Dozier says that the experiences he has here at UA cannot be matched and that no other university can get you the experience he has received here. From all the coaches that have come and gone in the past three years Dozier cannot thank them enough for all the football lessons and knowledge they have taught him but more importantly the life lessons that Dozier will use and remember forever. Dozier cannot wait to get to Orlando to finish the season off strong. Jimmy Perry said, “Dozier Dean was made for coaching and was instilled with all the characteristics to be a leader. From freshman year of high he has never been afraid to fail and has hit every obstacle head on.” Dozier says his plans in the future are to become the best coach he possibly can be wherever that may be, he just wants to impact players in a positive way and make an influence on their life in as many ways as possible.
